Goon Jam Is Here!

The rumour mill has been going, but it's now official... of course there's a jam on this year!

We had a great reception last year, and have learned from what went well and what didn't to come back even bigger this time. It'll all be going down from Midday on Saturday, August 18th. 

Same deal as before with a comp for different age groups, an extra jam or two, plenty prizes again generously sorted by Ocean sports, and sick little offer up for grabs by Lagoon Watersports, music, abuse on the mic, all that jazz.

Late to the party again but I'd be rude not to put this banger up. Draw The Line HYPE

Finally, it's official. The trailer for The Drawing Boards' full length film went live this morn.

The vid's been in production a fair while now, and is taking good form. Just a little last minute hammers trip over to Berlin to get out of the way first.

Tranny overload...

So Paddle this year fell victim to the effects of what will be remembered as the worst summer for a while, but the small amount of sunshine that the gods gave us over the weekend allowed at least a few people to have a bit of a skate on the ramps. Friday evening saw a heated session in the sun, Saturday was pretty much a washout, and Sunday saw the ones who were willing to wait out a few storms get a skate in between cuddling up under the halfpipes for hours on end. The last rain cloud was big enough to call off the event for another year, but the few dedicated ones left got a session going on the 5ft in the evening as everybody packed up around them.Here's a small part of what went on. We'll try again next year.

Take Part (Excluding Most People)

Take Part festival down at Preston Park went on a couple weekends back. While the younguns mostly zipped about on some ramps in the tennis court, a few of us got stuck into a little session on a 5ft halfpipe across the field. While everyone there killed it, Ginge was on hand to make an edit of the Drawing Boards riders present, as they were sponsoring the event. So here's a couple minutes of myself, Isaac Miller and Jak Tonge flipping and grinding in between others.

Bell Jum

A couple weeks back a load of heads headed out to Belgium on a little camping trip. Chief filmer Sirus Gahan has done a good job of getting this sick lengthy edit of the happenings out there out with a good turnaround to boot. Give it a peek and go make sure your passport is in date!

Holly, Wood 'n Weekend

Sup. So Hollingdean's been open for a week or so now. Rad to have a new park in the area.
The park's certainly a fun one, although a little on the condensed side. The stairs / hubba / rail are good for learning and messing about on, and the bowl at just under 4ft tall is amazing to zip around in, with plenty of lines to learn. The size of it does mean that it doesn't work too well when busy though, and I can see it being in it's current phase of being hoarded by feral rat children on three-wheeled scooters, as all new skateparks suffer from, lasting for at least the majority of the summer holidays, so pick your timing wisely.
The opening jam on Sunday went off, despite the dust storms causing temporary blindness in all. Peep a few photos from the day, shot by Jordan La Roche, and if you haven't already get up at sunrise and go check it out.

 

If THAT wasn't enough, another fresh lump of concrete is also just finishing up, over in Woodingdean. Word on the street is it's skateable already. I'll post up my thoughts as soon as I can get over there.

  

The official opening is in a couple of weeks time, on Saturday July 14th. More of the usual prizes, music, and al the other wonders mentioned here. If you missed the Hollingdean one you better be there this time!

And finally...cruised past Hove lawns today and saw the ramps for Paddle Round the Pier being erected. This was how they were looking this morning, and a few hours later they were looking very enticing. The 8ft especially looks a beast. Sure to see some sick skating on there this weekend.
The ramps will be usable from Friday afternoon for the whole weekend, with jams and sessions going on the whole time, amongst all the other Paddle fun and games. Do your sun dance!

PUSH Video Contest #3

     THE HUBBA


The boys at PUSH have whacked up another sick trick contest for you to hurt yourselves over. This time you gotta get your downwards grind on.

"In the third part of our video contest series we are giving you the chance to win a new skateboard of your choice. This time send us video footage of your best trick skating a hubba of your choice. Extra points for skating real street."

You've got a while to do this one. Usual routine - get your clips up on the Facebook page by the 31st of August.

Instead of reposting the amazing photo of Matt Ransom skating just about the only street hubba in the area, I'm going to massage my ego with my own lesser manoeuvre at said spot. Now go and show us how it should be done!

Fact of the Day - The term 'Hubba' comes from the spot Hubba Hideout in San Fransisco. The spot was actually known by this name before it was taken to by skaters, as it played residence to many a homeless person or junkie, or Hubbas as they were known there. The name hubba became a name for the ledge there itself, and eventually became the generic term for that obstacle type.

So there you go. Also added the mug shots I somehow missed out first time round.

Mini Prem

OG filmer Drew Marsden is having a quick premier of the long awaited latest instalment of his series 'Elle est Tombée' at PUSH skateshop this Friday the 22nd. Having seen a little rough edit a while back I know it's gonna be worth checking out. and there'll also be a load of other never before seen vids from other people on show too, so get yo ass down there for 8pm sharp! Put ya'sen down as attending on Twatbook to follow the action.


Oh, and while I'm here, just to let you know that we seem to have acquired some ping pong tables down at the goon. Not the best sport to play 20 feet away from the sea but they're there for your use.

Diary Time

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup...

Finally got my F-ing computer sorted. Turned out I had to reinstall my SATA adaptor driver for anyone that was wondering. The break in updates is over from now.

So, as for some news...we finally got the manny pad sorted today. The reason it took so long since the consultation was due to a number of call-offs due to weather. But today we managed to get down there early this morning and get it done.

We tweaked it around for a while and looked at it from all angles, in the end we figured this was the best for approaching it from all different ways. We tried to keep in mind being able to get to the back side of it, as the next thing we are looking at is to remove the side railing to reveal that sweet coping on the other side. 

On top of that, we got all the holes around the park filled in, most importantly the deadly mini ramp, and straightened up the grind box.

 Big thanks to Ricardo for making it all possible, and the two builders who followed all our orders and fixed the place up nice.

As for what's next, get your diaries out for a few upcomers...

Firstly, Take Part Festival returns next Saturday June 23rd, at Preston park. As part of a larger event around the park, there'll be a half pipe and street course up for you to skate, with demos from the Drawing Boards team as well. Things kick off at midday.

The Sunday of next weekend should, all things going to plan, be the opening jam for Hollingdean's new park. The build is well under way, and there should be some prizes and a good session going. That's the 1st of July.

A week after that one is Paddle Round The Pier, running July 6th, 7th and 8th down by Hove lawns somewhere. Anyone there last year will know that this should be sick, with a few different sized ramps, some sick skating and a bunch of other entertainment. Do your sun dance for this one.

And if that isn't enough, the few weeks after that will see the Crawley Jam, a Shoreham event or two, the opening of Woodingdean's new facility, and of course another hectic one at the Goon. We're looking at some time in August for that one, and going even bigger and better than last year. Details of all of those will be confirmed ASAP. Hype!!
